Ukraine becomes partner of Europe’s Three Seas Initiative

The Three Seas Initiative’s (3SI), known also as the Baltic, Adriatic, Black Sea (BABS) Initiative or simply as the Three Seas, member states have granted Ukraine participating partner status to the group and supported its efforts to join the EU.

The states of the Three Seas are Ukraine’s connection to the free world. The supply of weapons to Ukraine, the supply of fuel, the preservation of vital transport flows, green corridors for the export of Ukrainian food, the migration of people – all this works through the territory of the member states of this Initiative.

Ukraine also has something to offer to the Three Seas. The country is interested in diversifying energy supplies and is already involved in the North-South gas corridor project, through which Norwegian gas will be transported in 2023. Poland will thus act as a transit country for Ukraine, which is also financially beneficial for Warsaw. Moreover, the potential of national underground gas storage facilities is the strength. In terms of transport infrastructure, Ukraine is a participant in the 3SI Viking Train logistics project, which connects the port of Odessa with the Baltic states. The initiative was launched in 2015 as a platform for economic cooperation between the Central European countries of the EU. It seeks to deepen political, economic, energy and infrastructure ties between its members. The Three Seas currently brings together 12 Central and Eastern European and Baltic states: Austria, Czechia, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovenia and Croatia.
