Income from electricity exports can bring Ukraine an additional 2-3% of GDP

According to preliminary estimates of Ukrenergo, in the short term (up to a year) Ukraine can potentially reach over 800 MW electricity exports to the EU and yield revenues at equivalent to 2-3% of annual GDP growth.

Considering energy export potential, Ukraine expects to increase electricity exports to EU countries to the volume of the Burshtyn Island in a few months. After the unification of the energy system of Ukraine and the EU in March, there are already 200 MW of exports to Poland, which appeared almost immediately after synchronization.

The volumes exported to Romania, Hungary and Slovakia will be gradually increased. The plan is to reach 800 MW. Demand for electricity in the EU is currently huge. There is a general shortage of energy in Europe and electricity is no exception. The main indicator of this deficit, of course, is the price, which is now several times higher, for example, than last year’s price in Europe.

Therefore, supplies from Ukraine are currently a significant contribution to the energy security of the European region. In other words, this is not an opportunity for Ukraine to earn export revenue created by Europeans, as an opportunity for Europeans to ensure their own energy security.
