Congratulations on Ukrainian Statehood Day!

This memorable date once again reminds us that our statehood has a tradition of more than a thousand years and dates back to the times of Kyivan Rus. This is where our coat of arms, currency, and, most importantly, Kyiv as the political and cultural centre of Ukraine come from.

The holiday is celebrated on the same day that Ukrainian Christian churches commemorate the memory of Kyivan Prince Volodymyr the Great and the Day of the Baptism of Kyivan Rus-Ukraine. This connection is not accidental, as Volodymyr the Great’s adoption of Christianity as the state religion in 988 was a civilisational choice for Ukraine.

Since the Day of Ukrainian Statehood is tied to a religious tradition, the transfer of the commemorative date synchronizes its celebration with the new calendar. Therefore, starting next year, it will be celebrated on 15 July, given the transition of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church to the New Julian calendar on 1 September 2023.
