Ukraine’s electricity use fell twice during the war

Before the full-scale war, #electricity in Ukraine was generated by 15 reactors (power units) at four #NPPs operated by Energoatom SE, National Nuclear Energy Generating Company of Ukraine. The russian occupiers have controlled the Zaporizhzhia NPP and used it as a military base since March 4. The total amount of Energoatom’s losses during the two months of the war is estimated at UAH 36 billion. Ukraine’s electricity use fell twice during the war due to reduced generation and damage of equipment and NPPs infrastructure.

➖ Energoatom has completely abandoned the purchase of nuclear fuel produced in russia. Ukraine previously purchased some of nuclear fuel from russian TVEL and the other – was supplied by the American company Westinghouse from Sweden. Now the warehouses have a sufficient stock for use for the next 5-6 years.

➖ Besides, Ukraine has been working for two years on developing its #own#fuel that should be completed in two years. #Investments in own production, which mostly include industrial equipment for fuel production, is $20-30 million. According to Energoatom, next two years Westinghouse will increase production to the amount that will meet the needs of Ukraine.

➖ Among all components of its own fuel, Ukraine will have to import #zirconium tubes. However, it is possible to extract zirconium from ore in Dnipropetrovsk and Kirovohrad regions. About $250 million is needed to start tube production.

➖ Energoatom along with Westinghouse company working on construction of new AP-1000 power units at Ukrainian nuclear power plants. Five power units in total will be built, one of them is planned at the Khmelnytskyi NPP.
