The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) together with the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine (Minagro) announced the provision of temporary grain storage (sleeves) with 200 tons capacity. The project is implemented with the donor assistance from the governments of Canada and Japan, as well as the Australian philanthropic organization Minderoo Foundation.
The provision of such assistance to Ukrainian farmers is part of the FAO Grain Storage Support Strategy that is aimed at covering grain storage shortage to ensure global food security.
In total, FAO and Minagro will distribute 30,000 polyethylene grain sleeves. Grain storage means will be available to agricultural producers: legal entities and individual entrepreneurs who cultivate land on the territory of Ukraine, except for temporarily occupied territories. The number of sleeves that the farmer will receive will be calculated according to the number of applications received and in proportion to the area of cultivated land.
Basic requirements for programme participants:
• the area of land under official cultivation (owned or leased) from 100 to 10,000 hectares;
• to use the sleeves exclusively for storage of self-grown products;
• the arable land is located in government-controlled territories of Ukraine;
• the independent removal of sleeves from warehouses in farmer’s region or in the neighboring region (from Dnipropetrovsk – for agricultural producers from Donetsk, Luhansk or Zaporizhzhia regions, from Mykolaiv – for agricultural producers from Kherson region).
In particular, small and medium-sized agricultural producers are encouraged to participate in the programme. Applications for participation in the programme are submitted via the State Agrarian Register. Applications will be accepted for two weeks until October 9, 2022.
For reference
On September 8, 2022, the Australian charitable organization Minderoo Foundation joined the Grain Storage Support Strategy, which is jointly implemented in Ukraine by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine.
With the funds of the Minderoo Foundation, the first private source of funding for the Grain Storage Support Strategy, a project worth $3 million will be implemented. It will provide the storage of 264,000 tons of grain and oil crops in Ukraine.
To date, thanks to additional funding from the Minderoo Foundation, FAO has received $60.1 million. The total amount required for the implementation of the Grain Storage Support Strategy is $65 million.
