Demand for renewable gases is expected to grow significantly in Germany and across Europe. While domestic biomethane production will not be sufficient to meet future demand and hydrogen will not provide sufficient volumes in the short and medium term, Ukraine can become a strategic partner for reliable, certifiable and scalable renewable gas imports. Ukraine’s agricultural resources, large-scale farming structures and links between agriculture and energy production provide a strong basis for biomethane production. Biomethane projects are decentralised, scalable and more resilient than large centralised energy infrastructure. They can therefore support recovery, regional value creation and export-oriented investment even during wartime.
The Ukrainian Government Programme for the Development of Biomethane Production until 2035 provides a national framework for scaling production, developing exports and integrating Ukraine with the EU energy market. To unlock this potential, regulatory, technical and commercial barriers must be addressed early, including certification, guarantees of origin, cross-border transport, grid connection, offtake structures and bankability.
The side event is organized by UkraineInvest, Die Gas- und Wasserstoffwirtschaft (GWW) and Johanssen + Kretschmer Strategic Communication and will serve as a dedicated platform for dialogue between Ukrainian and European stakeholders on biomethane market access, investment opportunities, certification, offtake arrangements and cross-border business cooperation.
